    Ed Davey - Ukraine

We should welcome those in need

As the horror unfolds in Ukraine, the generosity of our communities is inspiring, with local people willing to open their homes and their hearts.

However, frustration due to the red-tape and bureaucracy that people are facing as they offer support, is loudly condemned by Lib Dems in Teignbridge. The government's incompetence is now made worse by the Home Secretary's attempt to deal with the issue of refugees by sending them half a world away to Rwanda. We need less rhetoric and more action. Lord Harrington, Minister for Refugees, needs to make his mark and take action.

There is a stark contrast between the Government's response to this crisis and that of the Syrians and Afghans. Many refugees are still waiting for help, they cannot be forgotten.

The Government's reaction to this crisis simply does not reflect the compassion seen from the British people, both at home and on the border with Ukraine. Boris Johnson and Priti Patel are betraying refugees and the British people who are ready to welcome them with open arms.

We need to keep pushing the Government to do their bit.

Please help send Conservatives the message that we cannot turn our back on Ukraine.

Liberal Democrats see the best in things. We celebrate diversity and nonconformity and if something isn't working we try to fix it or we fight for reform. We are committed to representing local people and making sure your voices are heard.

The Conservatives have tried to repeal the Human Rights Act before but the Liberal Democrats stopped them.

Getting through to 111 shouldn't be so hard. Each abandoned call is someone not getting the medical advice they urgently need.
The government needs to get a grip and urgently recruit more 111 call handlers, or people will turn to 999 instead.

We saw last year what a huge boost it gave to the party getting two new excellent MPs elected in Parliamentary by-elections. It's good for their constituents and also good for the party's prospects across the whole country.

We've also seen this month how Conservative MPs have failed to do what our country needs - to remove Boris Johnson from 10 Downing Street.

It's Carers Week - a chance to recognise, celebrate and, most of all, listen to the stories of unpaid carers.

People looking after their loved ones are doing a remarkable job in difficult circumstances. As a carer for most of my life - first for my mum, then for my gran, and now for my disabled son, John - this is something I know all too well.

The leader of East Devon District Council - and the East Devon Alliance Independents (EDA) - has confirmed he has joined the national Liberal Democrats party.

Cllr Paul Arnott has made the move ahead of a pivotal by-election in Tiverton and Honiton later this month, which could see the Conservatives lose a 24,000 majority, after the resignation of former MP, Neil Parish, who admitted watching pornography on his mobile phone in the House of Commons.

We all have our own special memories of the Queen's Jubilees. For me, they have spanned my entire life. So it is with great pleasure that I will join the entire nation in celebrating seventy years of Her Majesty's reign - on this Platinum Jubilee bank holiday weekend.

In her coronation speech, the Queen said: "Throughout all my life, and with all my heart, I shall strive to be worthy of your trust." I think the whole country will agree that our Queen has more than fulfilled her promises made to our nation.
